At Friday Box Office Kong: Skull Island Beat Logan For #1 Spot
Last week LOGAN had a monster opening that broke all expectations! The final X-Men outing for long time Wolverine star Hugh Jackman opened to $88 Million at the box office domestically.
Now although people believed the film would do well no one was expecting it to be this much of a success!! Bolstered by great PR and strongly positive reviews the film is fast on its way to passing the billion dollar mark! This year, however, it’s clear box office season is starting early with another monster dominating at the box office, a film that’s sure to fight LOGAN for the top spot; Kong: Skull Island.
Projections for the opening were estimated at $54 million opening weekend. The way things are going, it’s seems that it’s a big possibility that it will hit the target and then some. The film enjoyed a strong Friday presence with it being the number one at the box office pulling in $20.2 million. If these numbers are consistent over the weekend the film will enjoy the top spot for the weekend which pushes LOGAN to a still respectable number two.
Kong has a lot going for it, the film also enjoyed good reviews and has the star power to match with many marvel players in starring roles. The film stars; Tom Hiddleston (Marvel’s Loki), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Brie Larson (the upcoming Captain Marvel) all head this blockbuster monster flick. This film also will draw in a larger IMAX crowd which help push the films overall grossing, as monster films are great to be enjoyed on the biggest screens.
The IMAX experience even includes a sneak peek at Batman director Christopher Nolan’s next film Dunkirk. It’s not an easy win though it may be neck and neck so it’s a toss-up as to who wins this weekend. The previous weekends LOGAN crowd may flock to see this new monster flick, so it’ll be interesting to see who rules the domestic box office over the weekend.
Kong is the latest addition in Legendary Picture’s MonsterVerse, which is a shared universe for monsters such as Godzilla, Kong, and many others. They plan to make certain monsters vs each other. It was only after the 2014 monster reboot film Godzilla that the shared universe idea became a fully fleshed idea. We have the Godzilla sequel Godzilla: King of Monsters in 2019 and then Godzilla Vs Kong in 2020. MonsterVerse is full steam ahead!
