Guess Who’s Joining The Marvel Universe? Yes Iwan Rheon!

After being the most despised man on television for the last few years you would assume that Iwan Rheon, Welsh actor, would want to be the nice guy for once. But he’s not interested.

It seems that Iwan has really grown into being the bad guy really well, what with his part as the vilest and sadistic antagonist Game of Thrones had seen, came to an end just last season. It seems he enjoys being a villain as he has not only played the one and only Adolf Hitler but is now going to be a new addition to Marvel’s cast, as of course, the villain or complex antagonist.

On the 21st of February, it was reported that Iwan (31) had secured the role of playing Maximus the Mad, in the new series from Marvel and ABC called the Inhumans. Marvel have said to have called the series and epic adventure. The series follow a royal family lead by the King, Black Bolt, and his off-the-wall brother Maximus. Whilst no-one has been cast yet for the role of Black Bolt it seems that Iwan’s Maximus the Mad has half the title of the male lead.

Of course in every superhero movie, there has to be a ‘complex antagonist’ for every protagonist. In Inhumans, that villain is non-other than Maximus the Mad, who it seems shares a lot with Iwan’s past malicious character, Ramsay Bolton, as he is basically a power hungry lunatic that delights in killing to get where he wants to be.

Sort of like Loki, but a whole lot smarter. Whilst Maximus’s love for his brother is very intense, it does not overpower his desire for power. The Inhumans are an isolated group of mutated beings. However, the showrunner, Scott Buck, told Hollywood Reporter that the villain won’t be a complete and utter a-hole. He said: “Maximus is a complex character. Likeable, charming, tragic and villainous all in the same moment, and I’m very excited to have someone of Iwan’s considerable talent.”

Jeph Loeb, Marvel TV superior, added to Bucks’s comment by saying that Iwan’s ability in being “charming, roguish, and still completely unexpectedly dangerous” were essential in his casting of the character. Iwan’s casting even has the potential in adding some depth to what they call the Bad Guy roster, solving Marvel’s issue of shallow villains.

It seems that Marvel is heading for an epic Game of Thrones type version in Inhumans with their similar characters such as a teleporting dog Lockjaw (ghost), Black Bolt (Jon Snow), Kamala Khan (Arya Stark) and the Inhuman Queen Medusa (Daenerys Targaryen).
