Hugh Jackman Took A Salary Cut To Ensure ‘Logan’ Would Be R-Rated

Press were treated to a sneak preview of the upcoming Logan recently and received a taste of what lies ahead in this third and apparently last appearance of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine character.

Twentieth Century Fox released the Logan trailer and James Mangold shared a bit about the movies R rating. The new movie looks set to break from what we have come to expect from our X-Men superheroes as the Wolverine is growing older and must look after Laura, a young mutant played by Dafne Keen and Charles Xavier portrayed by Patrick Stewart.

The darker, violent direction looks sure to appeal to fans if the press audience reaction is anything to go by. R-rated movies are generally not as lucrative at the box office as PG-13 or lower rated movies. This stands to reason as you effectively lose a larger percentage of the potential movie-going audience. The tough decision by Twentieth Century Fox to go this route was made easier by the unusual move taken by Jackman in agreeing to take a pay cut for his role in the movie.

Financially it made the call much less of a gamble by Fox. In spite of the above comments regarding R-rated movies, the news of the possible R rating broke just after multiple movie income records were set with Deadpool which was also rated R. Deadpool, also part of the X-Men universe, made new box office records for Fox as their highest grossing X-Men universe movie and highest R-rated movie.

Deadpool is currently the fifth highest ranking movie at the box office this year. I am sure that give Fox a fair amount of confidence going forward with the R rating for Logan, particularly as it features the movie world’s all time favorite superhero. Movie goers have been enjoying Jackman as Wolverine from as far back as 2000 and, along with Stewart, are the stalwarts of the X-Men universe films.

Jackman starred in all of the first trilogy movies and the second movie of the prequel, X-Men: Days of Future Past, also a trilogy. Fans of the franchise will be sad to hear that this is the last they will see of Jackman as their Wolverine superhero. So, not only do we eagerly wait to see what surprises Mangold has for us but we also wait to see how Logan performs at the box office and if Fox made the right call. I’m pretty sure they did.
